Deepa Panchamia

Deepa Panchamia is a textile artist specialising in one-off, handmade architectural and sculptural textiles. Her philosophy is to challenge the conventional perspectives of textiles. Through a synthesis of material exploration and her own experimental techniques, she creates sculptural fabrics that can be moulded, manipulated and transformed – essentially moving textiles away from its traditional two-dimensional form. During Stockholm Art Week, Fiberspace will be hosting a finissage on Thursday 21 April between 17-19.30. Refreshments will be served. Welcome!
OCCUPATION?
Textile Artist
WHAT DOES FIBER MEAN TO YOU?
Fiber means to me – string, yarn, fabric, twine, paper etc. – anything that can be ripped, torn, stitched, cut, layered and folded.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FIBER OR TEXTILE TECHNIQUE?
I love manipulating fabrics – folding, cutting, layering, stitching and pleating different materials together to create intricate and repetitive surfaces and three-dimensional structures.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST VIVID TEXTILE MEMORY?
My most vivid textile memory is from when I was travelling in India and I saw four women hand-embroidering an Indian saree.
They were sitting on the floor, each at one corner of the saree, and I watched them as they carefully and slowly stitched an intricate pattern onto the fabric.
